PERFECT!!!!! For over 10 years now I've been 2nd guessing my antics in dealing with _exactly_ the same problem. The screws holdig the lid on were filled in and finished over, looked like a factory job (as incredible as that would seem). But I too hope someone knows for sure - I finally got it opened with a crow bar and the owner's permission.
