>From my experience deadness or "tubbiness" in a bass string may be improved by twisting the string. First make sure the piano is at pitch, as even a half step's flatness can noticably degrade bass string tone. The most I'll twist a string is three times, or twice for the thicker, lower strings, but sometimes less turns can create improvement. Make sure to twist IN THE DIRECTION OF THE WINDING as though you were making the winding tighter. Be aware however that there is a risk of becket or string breakage when doing this. Be also aware that while tone can increase dramatically, it can be temporary, sometimes reverting back to its tubby tone in as little as a day. Sometimes twisting won't do anything at all. Good luck Matt
