Because the Yamaha hammer has initially been treated with a hardening basis (the colored basis of the hammer) and the Japanese (so I have learned from a colleague who has been to Yamaha a couple of time never use steam but insted always use needles). I also remembr a mail here on this list saying that Japanese technicians forbid steaming.
