Hi all, The discussion on the pros and cons of replacing loose bridge pins with the next larger pin has been interesting. I have to wonder what is the method that you would use if you were to do this? I've only had occasion to do it a couple of times in my earlier years, but when I did do it, I always drilled out the holes with the drill bit sized for the bridge pin I planned to install, very much like I would when drilling a new bridge. Am I correct in thinking that some of you install the next size bridge pins without redrilling? Also, are there similar dangers in putting in larger pins (assuming the holes have been redrilled) of probability of splitting? In other words, would redrilling the bridge pin hole with the larger bit tend to leave a smaller hole than if it had been drilled at the larger size from new? (I'm thinking the larger sized pin could enlarge splits already present in the wood, irregardless of redrilling, but I was considering a bridge cap that's not split.) Since I started making new bridges a few years ago, I haven't had to do this type of repair. But I was wondering if some of you were comparing apples and oranges.?? Nothing urgent. Just pondering a bit. Hope you all have a nice relaxing holiday weekend. :-) Best wishes, Brian Trout Quarryville, PA btrout@desupernet.net
