Ok Richard,

Simple test for optimum spread is the narrowest difference
between down and up weight while nothing else is changed.

Good reasoning and good observation.

You can shim the flange for a test so you don't have to
change the rail position.  You can also cut a replacement
flange so the wippen can be moved two or three mm then shim
it out until you get the optimum.

Spread is to find optimum mechanical advantage.
