I found a very strange situation while inspecting a 20+ year old Schafer & Son's console the other day...at least in my limited experience it seems strange. The ONLY sign of rust/corrosion i found was on the bass strings in the first section only, and NOT on, or near the tuning pins. Each and every bass string, (from AO to the end of the first break only), were ENCRUSTED with so much rust, that they literally would snap like pretzels. The rust was present ONLY above the hitch pins, and before the bridge, exactly at the point where the string cloth was interwoven. So it seems that, somehow, the rust resulted in some way from this red cloth, which was dry as a bone, and to the owner's knowledge, never wet, or exposed to water. Any guesses as to what could have caused this deterioration? I'm wondering if there could have been a chemical reaction caused by the cloth.
