point where the string cloth was interwoven. So it seems that, somehow, the
rust resulted in some way from this red cloth, which was dry as a bone, and
to the owner's knowledge, never wet, or exposed to water. Any guesses as to
what could have caused this deterioration? I'm wondering if there could have
been a chemical reaction caused by the cloth.

A mouse ran accros the red felt, and the moisture from the urine attacked the
strings. It is best to remove the flet, and clean the strings.
