You should never use masking, duct, duck, plastic tape to silence duplex scales.

You may use _fresh_ electrical tape or better still use SILLY PUTTY.  Whatever
this stuff is made of it will not leave a residue, corrosion or deposit on the
strings.  Do not leave it there for an extended time, you will have a
frustrating time getting it all out again.  Not hard, just time consuming.  Fun
stuff to play with aa well, when you get bored tuning.
