Never Ever use a dowel or the pins will never, ever hold..  You MUST use the
plugs.

> new pin holes at a 7 degree angle, 

NOT 7 degrees.  The holes are more like 2 to 4 degrees.  If the pin is at a
height where the coil is 1/8" (no more) from the plate the pin and the string
leading away from the pin UP to it's first bearing point should be at 90
degrees, no more.
