JD;
 A couple of thoughts on your excellent post.
1. All glues, including hot glues,leave a residue that needs to be cleaned
off for subsequent work...granted some are messier than others.
2. PVA, or white glue, and PVC-E are not the same formulations. While PVA
pretends to get 'hard' or rigid PVC-E does not. PVC-E forms a strong bond but
retains some flexibility...this quality makes it excellent for many
applications. Although 'water soluble' it does not have very much in the way
of wicking qualities in felt usage and is excellent for such jobs as plastic
keytop replacement/felt to metal/leather to felt/etc.
 Like you though, my glue of 'preference for action/damper work is hot glue.
