The piano may have been located in a black church in the south at one time.
In the early part of the century up through the 60's, it was common in many 
black churchs to spread a layer of talcum powder on the keys before playing.  
They claimed that it helped them play faster.  
Of course the talcum powder worked its way into the action of the piano.
