I was at the factory in 1991, and Scott, who was responsible for the change, 
said it was fairly new at that time. I don't know the exact changeover date; 
maybe someone else does.

We also bore our own hammers, and still make strike line mods. It's an 
interesting chicken and egg thing - on soft hammers that will require some 
juice, I like to put on the first juicing BEFORE moving the strike line. It 
will have a different result. The weight of the hammer will also influence 
the ideal strike point, especially with soft pedal voicing.
