Paul,
After they started breaking so much,  I started doing the old wire with a
bigger loop. No noticeable improvement.

Also, when bending the loop, if you hold the wire vertically in front of your
eye and make the first bend away from your face and the second toward it will
always come out right. The wire tail should go to right of the part you are
holding. (or left if you're a "South paw")
