Front Rail Felt Theory?

The back rail I can understand - and I want many choices. You need different
widths to be able to position the strip properly, getting a sufficient area
glued, yet avoiding glue under the contact area. You need various
thicknesses because that will enable you to fine-tune positioning of the
capstans under the wippens or stickers at the proper height. Yes you can
adjust with capstans, but only so much. The back rail height in combination
with the center rail height will also determine the height of the key
fronts. So I think many choices in back rail cloth are a necessity for
proper work.
