Hi Terry, The capacitor acts as a battery, for the RAM, when the unit is turned off. Everytime you turn it on, the capacitor charges. If the capacitor loses its charge, then the 'other' disk battery maintains the memory on the RAM, till it goes flat. Then you have lost the memory, that tells it what to do. Then you have to send it back to Inventronics, for new batteries, and capacitor, plus reprogramming. I have lost my memory twice, over the years. With the flash memory in the SATlll, that is no longer a problem. Regards, John M.
