I have observed "opposite effects" also on occasion. I have a string in my piano that TuneLab will show sharp for half a second, steady (in tune) for 2 seconds, flat for 2 seconds, then back up to in tune, then a little sharp. Other stings waver back and forth between sharp, intune and flat.
