These off course have to be in decent shape even if you do replace checks and rearc tails (or replace hammers) In my experience roughing the tails, beyond very very moderate roughing, is in the end counter productive and you dont really gain anything in the process. The check system seems to work best when the tail can slide deep (ie create more tension on the backcheck wire) and straight down into the backcheck, and when the backcheck itself (ie the whole key assembly) is solid enough to hold the hammer in check) Wobbly and dirty parts do not make for good checking and I suspect account for more checking problems then just about anything else. my 12 øre anyways. :) -- Richard Brekne RPT, N.P.T.F.
