Yep either shellac or  your favorite clear finish well applied. If you don't 
get a barrier between the old remaining "green spots" they will happen in 
your new bronzing coats.

 Jon I don't think that "impurities leaching out of the cast iron" plays a 
big role in this type of problem. More likely it was caused by cooking grease 
and or some organic cleaners used to clean at the plate in the past (?)

In any event...... clean it good, sand it good and seal it good before 
bronzing and you shouldn't have a problem.
