I can't tell whether or not you've been hallucinating--what have you been
puffing lately? The pinning/notching on the Baldwin bridge is real, however.

I don't know when they started and/or started this practice (Steinway and
several others did it as well), but it was just one more attempt to add some
sizzle to a region where some soundboard design work was really needed. Kind
of like tuning the duplexes.... So how do you tune the front duplexes?

Don't worry about them. Simply replace the bridge caps and square them to
the front termination.
