Was thinking about this thread for a while...

Relocation...

Most areas of this country could be good for a
tuner technician. Economically speaking, if the
economy is good for most people, it'll probably
be pretty comparable for the tuner/tech.

Population density might be a possible indicator
of the amount of work to be had in a particular
geographic area. Whether there's a lot of techs
or just a few, if you're good at what you do and
there is a sufficient populace to support you,
then you should do fine. If you like big cities,
so much the better 'cause that's where the people
are, at least in greater numbers per square mile.

If you're attached to the countryside, you might
have a harder time making it as a tuner/tech.
Your service area may end up being pretty
stretched out trying to get to that "sufficient
populace". But, here's another alternative...

This is the 21st century! Motor freight, UPS,
Fed Ex, etc., travel nation wide. If you like
shop work, there's not much that can't be
shipped! (including whole pianos!) Yes, it adds
an expense, but if you're out in the 'boonies',
you're other expenses will probably be lower too.

My advice is:

Find a place you'd like to be and go there. It
may be unique in some way, and every situation
will be different. But regardless of where you
go, where there's a will, there's a way.

(How's that for a pep talk? I think I needed it
myself!)

Back to work...

Brian T.
