Changing Inharmonicity

Friends,

This anecdote may be interesting to you and may even apply to the subject at hand.

A year or two ago I took Roger Jolly's class on "Steam Voicing" during which he
did a demonstration. He asked Gina Carter to tune two notes an octave apart as
beatless as possible. When she had done that, he quickly steamed one of the
hammers, then asked her to play them together again. This time there was a
prominent beat we could all easily hear.

So what really happened here? I don't remember the conversation following the
demonstration, but I am assuming the steam rearranged the strength of the
partials. Roger may wish to comment.
