Having ordered countless sets of hammers from Steinway, it doesn't seem that any of the sets I received were lacquered. It is usually fairly obvious, especially if you put another coat of lacquer on them. The second coat of lacquer wicks into the felt in a very different way after one application. The way the hammers file also is an indication. Unless the application is so light as to be inconsequential.
