LIst,

The recent thread about refinishing with automotive lacquer brings to =
mind the motivation behind the creation of PianoLac.

No doubt good, long lasting results can be obtained using these =
materials for piano finishing, but there could be a steep price to pay.

These are dangerous chemicals on two counts:
1. They are highly flammable and explosive. Industrial use of =
automotive lacquers require expensive spray booth and personal =
protection technologies which are absent in the usual small refinishing =
shop. All you need is one spark from a light switch or a metal screw =
striking a metallic fan blade to set off the fumes. I have even seen =
lacquer sprayed in proximity to flame fired furnaces.
2..They are toxic. The fumes cause liver and lung diseases, including =
cancer. The solvents outgas for as long as a year. Spray this stuff in =
a garage attached to a house, and the fumes will penetrate throughout =
the house, and they linger. Pregnant women and small children are at =
the greatest risk.

Even in the best of circumstances, there is still grave risk. Case in =
point: there is a finisher in Brooklyn NY, one Colin Hung, who had a =
tragic explosion and fire 1 1/2 years ago in his professionally set up =
shop. All the modern safety precautions failed to save his son's life.

PianoLac was designed to allow the small and large facility to turn out =
high level piano finishes without the dangers associated with solvent =
borne technology. Not only is the appearance and durabilty equal to =
(and some say, superior to) solvent coatings, you save 30% in labor =
cost.

If you're envionmentally sensitive, you'll be happy to know that =
PianoLac in low in VOC and well below the limits of all U.S. localities.
