Terry:
Today I tuned a Baldwin Studio Hamilton Piano to A440. It was at least
1/4 step below pitch. Here is how I did it step by step:
                                            First Tuning
Tuned mid section to C526.3...(3 waves above pitch) raise each octave 1 beat
above this pitch...tune bass same pitch as mid section....10Min....just get
close.
                                            Second tuning
Tune entire piano to C523.3...A440..Set Temperment...(recheck tweak) tune
octave & unisons..proceed up the piano rechecking octave and then if
necessary Tweak final tuning as you recheck...then tune bass rechecking as
you did in the treble...finally tune the mid section unisons, recheck and
tweak if necessary.

The piano has been either tuned or rechecked 3 times when you are finished.
The tweaking If necessary is on the final tuning. As Bill said, one can tune
a piano quicker and more accurately by not fighting the instrument. I
finished this process in approx. 40-45 Min.
I'm sure this is no great revelation but I do hope this might help
someone. Remember the trick is not getting perfect the first or even second
time....the final recheck must ...must be perfect. You have three shots this
way. Since I tune aurally
I'm sorry I cannot talk in terms of cents.
