So...at the risk of sounding like a fool.....which is certainly no big 
stretch.....not listening to a piano up close is missing a huge 
opportunity.  

I like listeing to a piano near, mid-, and far distances.  The feeling, 
and the perception, are different and unique.  Why be prejudiced against 
near?  Protect your ears, if you think they're being compromised.
Your learning curve will be amazing.
