poor quality yamahas?

I would have to agree. I service any Yamaha verticals from the 70s, and a couple from the 60s. All have very nice coils and wound lengths. If some strings do not look newer than others, then it is likely that someone restrung the whole piano - or at least the partial restringing was done many years ago. I've never seen a sloppy one - except for those occasional replacement strings by tooners.
