Phil there are those models with just what you are calling a tail assembly, 
albeit even then with a built in termination point before the fastening. 
There are many more models not only with a bridge but with movable segment 
bridges. Some models are terminated in a tail piece fastened to the end of 
the guitar, to the top of the guitar and...... there are models which are 
fastened to the 'back' of the guitar(over the bridge and through the guitar 
body to fasteners on the back).
 Bridges on electric guitars can serve not only as terminations but also as 
primary pitch determinants.
