Just bend them down or straighter so they have very little force. I did a mini class on replacing them and in class demonstrated a 22 gram difference in downweight just by bending the spring from ridiculously strong to almost not there. I don't think wire gauge would make much difference in view of this. I do find I like the way pianos perform when the spring is set kinda strong, though.
