Greg..."sugar coating" refers to 'gently' needling the striking surface so 
that a very tiny bit of needle actually sticks in the felt...thus "sugar 
coating"..... This procedure when aprox done right produces some very nice 
results though not terribly long lasting......done wrong and you get to "firm 
em" up if possible. :-)
