    Tom, is this a Samick? I've been encountering a lot of them with =
the problem you describe. The flange is really binding up, and when you =
re-pin you notice a nice black ring on the old pin. I took some of these =
home and looked at them, and sure enough, the plating was gone on one =
side of the pin. What I've heard is that if they use a cheap low quality =
of flange pin, the plating comes off, goes into the cloth and grinds =
against the pin ( my conception of what's going on, I could be wrong, =
wouldn't be the first time. ) Anyway, re-pinning has always worked for =
me, never had any problem after that. The trouble is, how many flange =
pins are there in a piano, anyway? That's a heck of a lot of work.=20
    So, of course we're going to try to find something else. You could =
try soaking the flanges with 50/50 methanol/ water, tell them that the =
piano pretty much won't be playable for a day or two, and see what =
happens.=20
   =20
    Just re-read your post before I hit send. You mean you're just =
re-pinning without reaming?  When "I" say re-pinning, I mean pushing out =
the old pin, running a set of the Mannino reamers (Schaff, $12, or so; =
the best thing since sliced bread. ) through the cloth, and then =
re-pinning.=20
    There's a good article on this in the technical exam source book, =
available from your friendly PTG office. ($29)

    Other thoughts??.............

  How can I identify verdigris? The bushing is red, not discolored. =
The pin,=20
  when removed, does have a blackish ring where it was in contact with =
the=20
  bushing. The new pin doesn't move any freer than the old pin. CLP =
made=20
  little or no difference.

  Ron Koval has offered to lend me a set of reamers, but if it's =
verdigris,=20
  will reaming help? And will reaming the sluggish butts free them up=20
  indefinitely? I get the impression that the liquid solutions are only =

  temporary, and I would prefer a permanent solution to this problem. =
(And all=20
  my other ones, too.)=20
