---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment I am not shure if we actually know exactly who first came up with the con= cept of 'overstringing.' But based on the US pattent record, there are a = few misconseptions that can be cleared up. Steinway was the first to patent overstringing for the modern grand piano= . This fact is less significant when you understand that overstringing ha= d been used for a long time in square and upright pianos (at least 60 yea= rs). This is all in the context of the iron frame. The actual concept see= ms to have preceeded the US patent record, and was problably used first o= n wooden frames. If there is such documentation, one would probably look = for something pre 1800s. I am unaware of the 1828 Babcock reference, but I do know that the 'famou= s' 12/17/1825 patent was not overstrung. Its significance seems to have b= een the first single piece iron frame. All the information for this paten= t is missing, only the picture remains. Many asumptions have been based e= ntirly on a picture, since the actual description from the inventor is co= mpletly missing. Bradley M.
