Plate spraying

I need to change my procedure for spraying plate with lacquer.
Is anyone spraying the plates with water based finish? What procedure are
you following? And, What product for the gold do you recommend?
I tried using the water base polyurethane with the bronzing powder but the
results were poor. Any advise would be appreciated.
