Jim, List,

That's the way I used to think as well. Then someone, don't remember 
who, but someone with the creditability to know such things, advised 
me the reference measurement at the rear is not the end of the lid, 
but the furthest end of the piano.

Which is what I've been taking into consideration ever since when 
measuring grand pianos.
