Boston - Technical question

Hi Brian. You may be hearing the same thing that I first heard from my 1098 several years ago. It is in most every 1098 between about G3 and D4. I have also heard it in many Boston studio uprights. If it is the same funky noise we are talking about, I have researched it tirelessly. I and several Steinway techs have tried tuning, voicing, changing pressure bar pressure, changing strings, seating strings, leveling strings, thoroughly checking for sympathetic vibrations, etc. John Patton, Steinway's head concert tech took a long hard look at it also and decided it most likely originates in the v-bar in the plate casting.

You specified Boston uprights. Do you also hear it in the Boston version of the 1098, i.e. their 45 or 46-inch studio upright? You describe a harsh sound. My best description of what I hear is kinda like a little green man in the bottom of the piano that rings a bell sympathetically with the note that is being played. Also, my noise most often only kicks in after a second or so.

One of the thoughtful Steinway techs from the local dealer suggested a fix: "Just get used to it". I won't go into what my response was.
