When hammers are sliced apart after pressing, the (hopefully) internal
compression makes the edges flare out. This leaves a cup down the center of
the outer surface of the hammer, including the strike point. Prefiling just
removes the cup and squares the outer surface of the hammer to the sides.
It has to be done, whether they do it before you get the hammers, or you do
it afterward - either before or after hanging them. That's all it is.
