Hi Tom, When restringing bass only , I find it faster to re pin, Point #2 the bass strings are often at a much higher tension than the plain wire, so there is some gain in tuning stability longer term. Making coils and slipping them over the pins, can be a royal pain with the lower bass strings, a lot of time is wasted getting the coils nice and neat. Like you I always use the correct size of wire. When time permits I will also change the wire on all three strings and the adjacent note. This eliminates recalls for out of tune unisons, and mis matched voicing. Bass strings I order the two strings of bi chords. Again less call backs for wild unisons. May as well get paid, the re call always turns out to be a freebe.
