Strange front string mutes?

Forgive another newbie question, but what is being used here to mute the
front non-speaking string segments?  They look like pink dampers on each
unison.

            You've gotten the correct answer from Bob and Keith, but did
anybody notice that the negative was reversed in the photo?

 Or maybe it's a piano for lefties !
