Hi Bill,
If you want to use the can to store unused paint, using a screw driver to
open the can can do damage to the lip that will seal the can. However after
closing the can, turning the can over will seal the can. Sort of like using
tire sealant to repair a leak. Be sure ythough to store the can with the lid
on top.  Dont ask why I know <G>
To open the becket I use an awl to open the becket a little,then a sturdy
screw driver.
