I=92m leaning toward what the others are saying, though. You maybe got a
popsicle stick down there. Or a pencil or a MUTE??? Those hammers may be
coming close but not actually hitting the strings.

I=92ve had a similar experience where the bridge crown had separated
slightly on either side of the tenor/treble notch. When you hit the note
the string sounded, but not very powerfully. Meanwhile you also got this
loud wooden bonk that sounded like hitting a drum player=92s wood block
trap.

Look for separation or split in the bridge, or maybe it=92s come loose
from the soundboard (crack in board?).

I think it still sounds okay when you pluck it because of the relatively
very small amount of energy you are putting into it compared to wanging
it with a hammer.

Speaking of hammers: Where ARE they striking and are they still in good
condition, haven=92t =93popped=94 or anything?

This is Richard Strang, from Panama. I hope this email finds you all in

   I have ran into several pianos that all have the same problem, which
I believe is caused by something that may require major repairs, but I
am at a loss as to what the real problem is. The problem is this. You
can play all the keys to check all the notes, and you'll come to a
section of notes that won't play. The hammer hits the string, but the
only sound it makes is, BONK! The strings do no resonate as they should.
You can pluck the strings, and they sound okay. You can hold the damper
off the strings, but when the note is played, the only sound it makes
is, BONK! It sounds almost as if the hammer is hitting wood, instead of
the string. This is only in a section of notes, and in the case of the
U1 I inspected today, it was a little over an octave's worth of notes in
the upper tenor section, just before the treble break. All the bass and
all the treble was okay.
   Is this a problem with the bridge somehow? I have seen this problem
where only two or three notes are affected, and another piano where the
entire tenor section was dead, and I have had no solution. I feel bad
that I have studied and been in the practice for so long, but have no
solution to this problem. Can someone help me out? Thank you.
