Mental hospitals trying to identify graves of long-dead patients

Rick Daley, a spokesman for the cemetery project at the Napa State
Hospital, looks over a grave with the inscription, "God Can Help Me,"
on the grounds of the hospital in Napa, Calif., May 28. Behind a worn
wire fence, just beyond a garage in the brush behind Napa State
Hospital, rest a blacksmith, a seamstress, a piano tuner. They were
among the 4,368 former patients who died between the mid-1880s and
1924 and were buried wherever the institution could find space.
