This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Hello, It is very easy to have those springs stiffer if you take off the dampers stop rail, then one hand pushing on the long arm to open the coils, you lock the short part with a spring tool ar a hammer shank. You can put them back in place without a tool too if you like it (need to have not too large hands may be). One may take care not to stiffen them too much anyway, as it makes for a heavy touch fast. I see no real problem there since the rail is off and the fingers are not too heavy. Regards. Isaac OLEG Entretien et réparation de pianos. You could pull the action and try strengthening the springs. OK, maybe disconnect 'em and build and install your own real spring rail. But then the piano would probably work for someone with any kind of touch. Or just keep trying to regulate it until they run through all the technicians in your area. Oops, my bias is showing. Not very helpful, sorry. I tuned four crappy spinets today, and none of 'em bobbled. I just don't know why it is requisite on a U1. Wish it wasn't. Set let-off back at 1/4" and call it close enough. It's late, sorry, I'm leaving my flame suit off, I just can't sleep with that damned thing on, maybe I'll be toast by morning. Not the worst of fates. G'night. Ken Jankura ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Driscoll To: pianotech@ptg.org Sent: Friday, March 07, 2003 12:06 AM Subject: Yamaha U1 regulation problem List I recently serviced a U1 vertical for a first time client. Excellent piano very little wear and -tuned up quite well. I did however find lettoff to be over !/4 “and inconsistent. I adjusted to 1/8” –and took up lost motion. Tightened action screws. The key dip and after touch were sufficient, and the jacks are free to travel away from the butts---no interference from that adjustable rail—(sorry, I forget Y’s nomenclature on that component) My client has a light touch and the action still stutters I returned, shortened blow distance readjusted lost motion, and adjusted spoons to re-correct damper timing. My client called again with the same problem and called other technicians for advice also I know bobbling hammers can be a problem on Yamaha verticals and I’ve worked on hundreds of these, but I can’t shorten blow any more and as I mentioned, keydip-aftertouch are correct. I’m hesitant to increase lettoff back to its original excessive amount, so esteemed colleagues ---Any suggestions? I’m going back next week. P.S. Backchecks are also adjusted---I.E. catchers are not bouncing out or off of the backchecks Tom Driscoll RPT ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
