Terry, and anyone else interested...

Spurlocks rail conversion procedure is part of his "Vertical Hammer Replacement" instructional pamphlet available on his website for $2.50. Basically you taper the "flat" of the rail so the new flanges sit properly if needed, and you use the flanges with the small "V" groove or the standard wood bead flanges and use 1/16" steel rod (I get mine from www.msc-direct.com) to keep the flanges aligned, no need to make and glue a wood bead. And yes, the brass rail is used as a drill guide as you mentioned.

The maple rail also is beveled perfectly for the wooden flange base to set on. I can easily see now that really the only thing you need to do is plug the old screw holes for the brass rail, cut a strip of wood for the indented part of the flanges and glue it to the maple rail, and then drill the flange screw holes. You can use the brass rail as your pattern for spacing the flange screw holes. Seems pretty staight forward actually. Assuming I'm not too far off course here, I'm sure Bill will have some handy hints for how to position the brass rail for the drilling guide and some other details. But heck yeah, this looks like the way to go! I had heard of doing this, but I guess it just took hearing someone suggest it to get me moving. THANKS! I'll let you know how it works out.
