Hi Clyde, I keep the ends from sets of Bass strings I replace. I have them in small roll pack in 6" lengths, in order. That way I have the larger sizes for splicing. I always make sure that size is within 1 thou. preferably larger. On the question of large core wire, I have found a couple of times, that I had to drill the hole in the tuning pin larger to accept the string. Regards, John M.
