The most important thing that needs to be done is tune a piano so that IT is in tune by and to itself, regardless of how it sounds with other instruments. To make sure that two instruments are at least at the same pitch, you can put A4 at the same frequency. But when you to try to tune one instrument exactly like another instrument, one of the instruments is not going to be in tune with itself. 

I have found that when two instruments are played together, as long as they are at the same A4, unless you hold one note for a second or longer, and compare beats, almost no one is going to hear a difference in the tuning.
