Short Treble (sustain?)

Just one more info :

Meanwhile, I just tried, as said in replies, to take away a few unissons strings and scrape the top of the bridge, until the varnish and the grooves had disappeared (I had enough downbearing to be able to loose a little bit of wood on the top of the bridge : I only lost 10 % downbearing). Disappointment : no difference. It is, though, difficult to say with only a few notes, but yet, ...
While I was there, I tried, following earlier threads, to simulate a kind of duplex, using a small rod (1,4 mm) at the plate and another just behind the agraffee to have the strings bear on it instead of on the felt, and indeed, while this time I lost a more significant amount of downbearing, I had the feeling that the sound was, how say, better breathing : I mean, I think the decay of the higher partials, proportionnally to the decay of the fundamental, was significantly longer. Again, no spectacular difference, but yet ...
My feeling, though, at the moment, is that I am playing with trifles, but not curing the problem.

Regards,

Stéphane Collin

| Hey there Joe, and others
|
| Just curious as to how a couple thin coats of varnish on the top of the bridge
| can dampen sustain, or otherwise effect vibration of the soundboard ? Could you
| explain your thinking abit here ?
