Clyde, I had a bass string break on a Steinway I was giving a huge pitch raise to. I tied it and took down model number, serial number and string's number position for the left and ordered a replacement from Schaff. I explained the nuisance of settling a new string in and she chose to live with the knotted string as it had "caused no problems." We put the replacement string in the piano bench and I eventually moved away. Some will want the new "perfect" string and will also expect numerous followup visits to pull it back up to tune. Better establish a minimum call-out charge in that case.
