David, I suspect you need to get your hide glue systems correct. Before I did that, I too had failures. Once you have the glue at the right water/glue mix and the temperature is correct, AND you have a VERY good quality of glue, you should not have a bit of trouble. Yes, you do have to work rapidly and not dawdle. Use of "extenders" is definately not needed unless you are veneering! Even then, there are ways around that. Do not take for granted that the "Supply Houses" are sending you Quality glue! Believe me, I've tried them all and have found that 90% have basic crap for glue. The glue they supply is like an asian piano....The only consistency is a total lack thereof! The "counter-bore" tip is a very good one. Use it. If you would like my spec. sheet on hide glues, email me privately and I'll ship you one. Yes, there are other glues that can be used, but I, personally don't like them when I have to repair something put together with them. Del has found one that works very well and is fairly easy to un-do, as I've been told. Most of the alternate glues I've worked/struggled with will allow you to take the parts apart, usually with heat, but they tend to leave a residue, deep in the wood. This residue is the problem. If you don't have the Specific glue that is compatible then the repair will generally fail. DAMHIK! :-( BTW, .....Burp!<G> I'm still stuffed with the good stuff of Thanksgiving.<G> Hope you are in the same situation.
