Hi Paul This question has been up several times, and so far I have not really seen a satisfactory answer. What I have heard up to now is either a denial that the projection is really better in Steinways to begin with, or claims that a rib crowned board can be made to sound exactly like a cc board... tho I have yet to see this done. Its hard to keep tempers from flairing enough to really get at the heart of this particular bit, and its really an interesting one. Personally I have no doubt that Steinways have a good deal of extra projection that I find only in a couple other pianos, one of which I know also uses a pure CC board. Secondly...we have this unclear bit about panels of same dimensions with ribs of same dimensions and with same crown... in two boards one CC and one RC. Seems to me that the CC board here is bound to have more stiffness due to higher panel compression. Tho mass and dimensions be the same... in other words... one is able to achieve a higher stiffness to mass level in the compression board... all other things being equal....
