I have two, Hale, circa 1903. The "handle is made of Rosewood and the end are solid steel, (about 1" of each tip). I can only assume that the intent was to use the "Hammer" part for, quickly, hammering a tuning pin in, in the tuning process. Hence the name "Tuning Hammer".
