Greg,

Yes, I've also given up on wives and daughters. But a trained massage therapist can feel the "knots", and knows how hard and how long to work them to get reasonable results without causing further injury. I was amazed at how quickly she zeroed in on the trouble spots. The cost is a factor, though. Her hourly rate is the same as mine. Maybe it's time I tried the ball-in-the-sock myself.

Mike,
I have to admit that I haven't gotten far enough along to do ALL my own therapy yet. I certainly intend to with the information found in Mr. Davies book. I see no reason to pay someone else for what I can do myself and really, if you think about it, no one can possibly do it like you would anyway. Just yesterday my wife and kids (girls) tried to give me a back rub. The whole time was filled with " a little to the left, no ... too far, now down a bit, just a little more, etc. etc. It seems that when someone else does it they're always sort of skipping over the area needed but never quite pin pointing it. The friend that gave me my copy of the book uses a sock with a super ball in it and puts that between his back and the wall. He finds the spot he needs right away and keeps the ball right on it while he works out the "knot". I think that's as good an argument as any for doing it yourself. Another might be, just how many times can you afford to go to your therapist?

best,
Greg Newell

Greg,

Yeah, great book. It has given me an excellent understanding of what the massage therapist is doing to me, and why it feels the way it does. Are you doing your own massage? I was a little put off by the number of possible trigger point locations, and the whole pain referral thing, it seems like a lot to learn, when I can just go see Donna and get the excellent results. But I can be a real sucker for "do-it-yourself", all I would need is a little encouragement....

Speaking of Clair Davies, have you all heard of his (new?) book? It's called "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" "Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief" . I have read only a part of it so far but I can confidently recommend it to everyone without reservation. I'd tell you where you could get your own copy but mine was a gift to me from a fellow sufferer who, it just so happens, isn't even a piano tech. Check it out folks if you'd like to do something about your own aches and pains rather than spending countless dollars to have some health care professional tell you that they can't help you AFTER collecting their fee.

So can I infer from that statement that all tapering of soundboards is
done on the top surface?

Yes you've answered the $64.00 question correctly. Well almost. Clair Davies used to do his on the bottom but I don't know why.
